Catering Services
There is great deal happening at lunchtimes in 2009. School meals with Solihull Catering Services (SCS) are amongst the best served throughout the borough, and the meals served here at Smith's Wood Sports College are no exception. In fact we are very proud to work in close partnership with Smith's Wood Sports College where together we have produced some pioneering projects and incentives that will be used in other Solihull Schools in due course.
Our "Points Make Prizes" incentive was very successful here at Smith's Wood Sports College, the scheme was piloted in three of our secondary schools. The idea was simply to award each food item with an allocated number of points varying on the health benefits of the food. For example fresh fruit salad would give a points value of 10, while a sausage roll would only be 1 point due to the low nutritional content of this food item. This was advertised around school with posters, and target points were set for the students to reach. Prizes ranged from HMV vouchers to a mountain bike, the points were automatically added for the student at the point of sale. This scheme will be in place during the summer term 2010 with a lot more prizes on offer than before.
The new school has provided us with the opportunity to serve the students in a new, modern and bright environment, which will enhance the dining experience here at Smith's Wood Sports College. The Biometric trading system has helped us and the students to use this new technology to its full
potential and enable everyone to receive a more user friendly system while still enjoying the same high quality service.
A new set of nutritional standards came into effect in secondary schools in September 2009; this will compliment the government's standards for school food, which we have been using successfully at Smith's Wood Sports College for some time. These standards encourage better eating habits amongst our youngsters that will stand them in good stead and help them to maintain good health as they grow up. Our menus are different everyday and include fish, meat and vegetarian options to ensure we cater for everyone. In addition to this we can produce foods for students who have special dietary or cultural needs, please talk to your catering manager about this - Mrs Evans.
Please feel free to talk to us at any time about the service we provide or concerns you may have regarding your child's diet, directly to the school kitchen 0121 788 4100 ext 4757 or to the Group Manager for Secondary Schools - Richard Wainwright on 0121 742 5166.
